Kiln-Dried vs. Seasoned Firewood: Which Should You Buy?
Updated 2026-07-02 ยท The Woodpile
Both kiln-dried and seasoned firewood can give you a great fire โ the difference is how they are dried, how they ship, and what they cost. Here is how to choose.
The short answer
Kiln-Dried
Heat-treated in a kiln to under 15% moisture. Lights fast, burns clean, and โ because heat treatment kills pests โ it is certified to ship across state lines. Best for convenience, gifting, apartments and anyone outside a local delivery zone.
Shop kiln-driedSeasoned
Air-dried outdoors for months to under 20% moisture. Costs less per cord and is delivered locally by truck. Best value for regular home heating when you have space to store it.
Shop seasonedMoisture is what actually matters
Wet wood wastes energy boiling off water, smokes heavily and builds creosote in your chimney. Any wood at or below 20% moisture burns well; kiln-dried simply gets there faster and more consistently. If you buy seasoned wood, look for cracked ends, a hollow "clink" when two pieces knock together, and a moisture reading under 20%.
Why shipping is different for each
Moving untreated firewood across state lines can spread invasive pests such as emerald ash borer and spotted lanternfly, and many states restrict it. Certified, heat-treated firewood is exempt because the treatment kills those pests โ which is exactly why The Woodpile ships only certified kiln-dried wood nationally and keeps seasoned cordwood local. See our shipping page for details.
Which should you buy?
Want it delivered anywhere, ready instantly, no storage hassle? Choose kiln-dried. Heating your home all winter and have a dry place to stack it? Seasoned by the cord is the better value. Many customers keep kiln-dried on hand for quick, clean fires and buy seasoned in bulk for the heating season.
